Revs - it was probably a fast time - but sequential clutchless shifts up through the gearbox, with the normally-aspirated petrol engine at, what - between 10K to 16K? - didn't really do a lot for me....like a busy wasp I'm afraid.

Holy crap! I have driven a speed boat at around 70 mph which I thought was scary (mind you it was in the North Sea so slightly different conditions to those in the video), but over 170 mph!!!

I wish I could pull up some old footage of my dad driving an open cockpit Drag Boat! The danger and death I witnessed during those years as a little kid was crazy.

A friend of my dad was world champion in off-shore racing a number of years back. He had to stop because the beating his body was taking though, especially the kidneys. Seriously impressive stuff though.

yeah, the technology they developed for cockpits and seating in ocean racers went into longhaul trucks... massive problems with the back and prostrate cancer etc... i think the problem started in ww2 though when they had alot of highspeed torpedo boats...
i dont like the thought of speed on water... its stupid enough on a perfectly sealed road...

All of that beautiful engineering ruined by the liberal use of slot-heads...!
Good vid - cheers Revs.

yeah i thought that, only i/we call them flat heads (the screw drivers you use for them atleast) lol... definitely makes it look wobbly... but man the tolerances must be insane!

Re: A Little Something For DeadCat
What made me curious was that he used "Allen Key" grub-screws (Socket-Head Cap we call them) - and yet he was using Slot-Head Screws everywhere else...weird...!
BUT...I have come across this phenomena from European Engineers before...
Their argument is that you can generate too much torque with an Allen Key - therefore, they ACTIVELY promote the use of slot-head screws, to stop people literally "wrenching" the machine screw / bolt into thread-strip territory...
Me? I've learnt to apply the necessary torque for the component - regardless of the style / head-type. Into perspex / perspex-with-a-helicoil / right through to tooling-steel. It's a "feel"...
I was genuinely upset with that video - all of that work (including the ludicrously tight tolerances that you suggest), let down by "amateur" components and fixings (as I see it!)...but watch again - as he struggles to get the necessary angles on some of those screw-heads. A decent Allen Key with a 60-degree ball-end would have made his life so much easier.
In fact, there's a section where he struggles to locate, let alone drive a slot-head...! If he'd used a Socket-Head cap with a Square-Ended Allen Key, he could have achieved the task in a quarter of the time....!
MMmmmm....engineering porn much...I love it....LOL!
