Nascar...Holy Crap!

Saw this video of the last lap mayhem. Before the shit hits the fan it looks like a normal highway during rush hour, except that they are actually going pretty fast. Must be pretty intense to be in the middle of such a pack...

How come schools of fish or flocks of starlings can group and travel like that - but never end-up in a train-wreck?

I don't like NASCAR, but that was impressive driving - well until the end.
