Sebastien Loeb New Record at Pikes Peak

Just destroyed the old record. He's so good, and the car is really a piece too.

Sebastien is one of the absolute all time greatest drivers. The way he has been dominating the WRC is just crazy, and now as a semi-retired driver he seems to be even faster.

One thing though, I thought Pikes Peak was more impressive back when it was still a dirt road up top, like when Vatanen broke the record.

Agreed about the paving, although the previous record was set on the fully paved road.

But the fact that he utterly obliterated the old record, and beat the old record holder's new time by a minute is what is really crazy.

At one time, 10 minutes was the goal. Then Rhys Millen broke that barrier. But Loeb on his first effort has made under 8 minutes now seem feasible. If Loeb were to return next year I think the goal would become a time under 8 minutes.

It must be particularly humiliating to the former king of the peak, Millens, who's best in his new car was low 9s but still a minute off Loeb's new record

You know that the year before Vatanen broke the record, Michelle Mouton had broken the old one with over a minute. It didn't make big headlines, but she was the first Euro to take it to the good old boys, and a girl too!!

I don't remember their names, but they ended up both being ok.

I don't really know any of the names that compete in Pikes Peak - what are the backgrounds of the competitors usually?

Seb Loeb is obviously a 9 times Rally World Champion (with close to 50% win record!!), so is it that much of a surprise he can beat these other drivers by that much?

I suppose partly because it's such a short 'stage' that the time difference per kilometre is quite outstanding, but he is probably the best rally driver the world has ever seen.
Putting him against the other WRC drivers who are bloody good too and he beats them convincingly, put him against these Pikes Peak competitors and the gap is surely going to be even greater even if they have a wealth of Pikes Peak experience.
