Re: Bad design
To me the Aztec looks like a big "Fuck You" by the designers. I can imagine the board asking them to develop quickly an SUV using what they have and not spending any money. They would say that it can't be done, and are then told to do it anyway.
So, they go back to their design studios and decide that they will show the board. By the time the deciders actually see the monstrosity it is too late to stop production...

Re: Bad design
Watched Top Gear's new vid last night called the worst car in the world. I'm pretty sure they got their inspiration from this thread. So which one of you is Clarkson? Lol.

Cool, let me know what you think. I found it very entertaining in the usual Top Gear way.

Re: Bad design
DS, Yes I did and thank you. I haven't followed up with you or followed the link yet because I've been doing stupid long hours on a commercial project all week and have barely had time for sleeping, let alone crawling the web.
I'll look at it this weekend.
Thanks again,

Can I put an F1 car in here?
Here's my nomination, the Eifelland Typre 21:

Re: Bad design
Yeah, the Eifelland was one strange beast, and one that tends to come out in any thread about ugly racing cars.
I suppose the difference between this and the other cars mentioned in this thread is that there was at least a point to the Eifelland design. Racing cars, as opposed to normal cars, usually look how they do because the designer is trying to make a faster car. The actual looks are not important, and never the objective, whereas for a regular car the looks are often the main reason a car looks how it looks.

Re: Bad design
Nope. But it was designed to be.
The Williams walrus nose was no beauty queen either.

Pabs sat with me, and just dissected the hell out of that walrus nosed pig. We got a good look at why that was a bad idea.

Re: Bad design
Well for the Arrows, like for the Jordan in 2001 as well, is was not so much a nose design as it was an attempt to just get another wing in there. Like it wasn't part of the car. Tyrrell had tried something along those lines in 97 as well with the "outrigger" side wings.
I can see F1 car designers try to modify a base in order to improve downforce by chucking wings on it, but the "beauty" of the Eifelland is that it is the whole car that's designed this way. They did then try a number of changes to it, making it perhaps a bit less strange than the image shown earlier.
There was the tea-tray wing attempt:
And then finally a version with a normal front and rear:

Re: Bad design
Coming back a bit on the whole bad design thing, and more particularly my favourite victim Peugeot/Citroën, I just had to mention some of the latest news.
First of all, the company is suffering considerably, and the French just can’t understand why. In 2012 they made the biggest loss in their history, all the while VW group produced yet another huge profit resulting in all staff receiving again a bonus of around EUR 7’500. In the news we watch regularly on French TV, they can’t understand it, but blame the general reduction in sales figures for Europe. Then there was today an article in my favourite local financial newspaper, l’Agefi, with an interview of one of the top managers from PSA. He quoted some very interesting sales figures for Peugeot and Citroën which actually got me to write to the paper.
First of all he claims the group sold 14 million vehicles in 2012. I found that particularly interesting as the VW group sold 5.74 million, and the global vehicle sales figure for 2012 was something like 80 million. That would imply that Peugeot/Citroën has a global market share of 18%!! Compare that to the 7% share of VW… He then went on to claim that they sold 360’000 cars in Switzerland during 2012. Another very interesting figure given that the total number of cars sold in Switzerland was 328’000, as was pointed out in the following article. With such impressive sales figures I have to admit that I can’t understand either why they are making such huge losses…
Anyway, they have some good news. They have released a competitor to the Mini Cabriolet, the Citroën DS3 Cabriolet. It seems that this is a lucrative sector, and their car is set to be a big hit. The only problem I can see is that it is not actually a cabriolet, and with the roof opened there is absolutely no rear visibility.
Now the DS3 is not an ugly car, but the cabrio?
Compared to a Mini Cabriolet...
