Cateram should just run the cars hot. Who cares if they get penalties for blown engines, they are already in the back of the field.

If anything, being on the last row may even give you a better chance to avoid the chaos in the middle.

This year, some penalties will be rolled over to the next race. E.g., Maldonado gets a 10-place grid penalty but he qualified 16th of 22, so only drops back 6 places. In the following race, the remainder of the penalty carries through, so he'll still start the race 4 places back. A penalty can only be rolled over once.

To ensure the guys at the back do get penalised, they will be given a drive-thru penalty on lap 1 of the race. So say Kamui does qualify 22 of 22 and received a 10-place penalty for engine change, on lap 1 of the race he'll have to pit and serve a 5 second stop-go.

Again, it doesn't really matter if they qualify on the back row though!


Having a blown Power Unit, is going to be an expensive proposition. You only get 5 of them for the season, and if you have to use an entirely new 6th Power Unit, you will start from the pit lane. Using a 6th element on a Power Unit that has 5th or less elements on it results in a 10 spot grid penalty. Interestingly, these penalties carry over to (only) the next race. So if you have a poor qualifying, say P18, and then need to use your 6th Turbocharger, you’ll start this race in P22 and carry over the other 6 spot penalty to the next race.

The Power Unit penalties work like this:

First time a 6th of any element is used = 10 spot penalty
First time a 6th of any of the remaining elements is used = 5 spot penalty
First time a 7th of any element is used = 10 spot penalty
First time a 7th of any of the remaining elements is used = 5 spot penalty

Wow...!
I'm reading this month's F1 Magazine - and obviously haven't got to that bit yet.

But I understand that the "Power Unit" is made up of sections:
MGU-K (KERS)
MGU-H (Heat->Energy converter).
Turbo.
Traditional Lump.
ECU.

And as such, the teams can swap-about any of these components - from engine to engine - without penalty.

I also understand that the gearbox is separate from these components...and that the available gear ratios have been seriously curtailed.

Double-Points are awarded for a full ashtray though...  scratch 

Jeez...it's gonna take a race or two to get my head around all of this stuff, that's for sure.

It's going to be a right old pain in the ass following F1 this year.

Too many rules and regulations which will impact what's going on. I'm finding it difficult to get to grips with it in all honesty.

It's so complicated now that any casual viewer just won't be able to appreciate what's actually going on which is a real shame.

I'm a bit disappointed with the Williams livery, it is a little too bland for my liking.

I was hoping that the Martini influence would be similar to that which appeared on the Lancia LC2 sportscars in the early 1980s:
