Facebook sucks

I hate the fact that posts on SC FB page seem to get a lot of responses.

My thought is that the SC site here has so many categories, and people have so many other avenues online that it gets lost in the wind.

Maybe, and only a suggestion, we should narrow the the available categories to just a couple. Racing, politics, and everything else.

I don't know. I just check unread threads which would defeat my idea...but I'd like to see this site return to it's former glory. Maybe we need a villain like T3 to draw us together.

Thank you H8R!! I personally hate Facebook, and it was really only by chance I stumbled upon a recent thread in the Shamucroaks page about the Shamu stickers.

At first I thought about just making them available here, and to begin to disbar those posting over there. Then I figured there wouldn't be anybody left...

Anyway, it does seem a bit silly to chat nostalgically about Shamucroaks on Facebook when the real thing is still alive...just!

One thing I can say about SC is that this group gets irony, and sarcasm. It is one of the fundamental tenets of of being a Shamuist.

Now here's a random picture that has nothing to do with anything....Other than the fact that you can't post pictures into threads on FB, which IMO makes FB all the worse. Threads can't go haywire without funny memes.

I really only check FB on my phone and I can't access the SC page from my phone for some reason. I much prefer here but I must be honest in saying I don't come by as often because of the busy family and work schedules.

I'm as guilty as anybody for not showing up here as much as previously. I'm with DS on the busy Family/Work thing. 2 little boys are a big commitment of time. Used to be I'd get up at 0:dark:00 hours for every race and have plenty of input in discussions. Now, sleep is really needed when I can get it.

And, I'll admit I've used FB to reconnect with a whole group of old friends both from school and from my skater and punk days, so that does serve a purpose too.

Anyway this group remains unique and a very special batch of people and I will try to do more to maintain that connection...

As in life, and as in "family", so in t'internet...
A group (family) forms, morphs, splinters, and re-convenes in natural cycles:

There is a healthy competition going on in one F1 Fantasy League (Etana), involving quite a few non-regular "Shamuists"....which I'm losing - and badly....

There is still some input from "the family" on the original F1 Manager League....which I'm winning - and well (10th overall at the last count!)

There is Facebook too...

And there's "here".

We all know who we are.
And we all know that life / priorities / circumstances evolve.

Some methods of communication suit some whilst evoke revulsion in others: Aunt Maud's 60th & 70th & 80th & 90th may not be attended by all...and those at the 60th may not all be at her 90th, and vice-versa.
But we all know and respect Aunt Maud, AND the fact that she has never sold the farm.

The fact that the farm is still there - and our knowing that the farm is still there more to the point - gives us a constant foundation from which to spread our wings: Safe in the knowledge that we can have a bolt-hole to run to, should it all hit the fan.

I've never met any of you, and yet I count you as real friends.
Unfortunately, I have been in a position to be truly gob-smacked about what life has thrown my way whilst making the plans - and I've always received a sympathetic ear with no hidden agenda attached. Something that I can't always rely-on from my "blood relations". And I'm certainly not alone here, in that respect.
Ditto, I've had the piss mercilessly ripped here where necessary - and even when not necessary...and why not...!

Bottom Line: This is a genuine family. We don't all need to be together in the same room at the same time to know that our brothers & sisters are still aware that we exist.

Seems to me that not knowing what disbarring is might warrant it!

Long time no see. A decade, perhaps.

A rant. To be taken with a pinch or a pile of salt. I'm writing stream of consciousness so please don't expect coherency.

I haven't written in a while so I am rusty. Except that rust is becoming an outmoded concept. We have passed from rust to what, oxidization? Stickiness? We are no longer in the realm of the mechanical, even the electro-mechanical but the electronic-digital. While physical mechanics are disappearing from the popular imagination the idioms of the office are not. It survives through the transition to a digital world in ways that machines do not.

I think our social media selves are pretty firmly lodged inside the idea of a cubicle. The important thing to note is that a cubicle means work. Your cubicle is a place you can tailor in limited fashion. Your wall gets covered in photos and things to remind yourself that you have a personality, lest you find yourself uneasy and unproductive. These are the idyllic wallpaper we cover the uniformity with. To extend the metaphor think of the social media realm as an office. A like is a person stopping by to say hello. A share is a piece of intrigue shared at the water cooler. But maybe this is not cynical enough to be true.

In social media-land we all inadvertently work for the man, man. Except our wage is paid in validation of our own ego. Ego is a real currency these days, and it is prone to the inflation of human expectations, so unless we are social-super-stars we are paupers and we subsist egocentrically. Self-dom is being turned into serfdom.

Social media makes a global marketplace of ego, yet the currency is not evenly divided, it accrues around pockets of strong personality. Those that claim a right to your online time. Your likes, shares, comments. These are the people who stockpile the currency by inflating their presence, and everybody is complicit. It is a global marketplace that has a strong tendency to localise. These people are the low hanging fruit of the ruling class. They think themselves in control but their dominion is to manage the social-serfs under them and they think this height is the pinnacle of acheivement because they do not like to think that theirs is a paltry power. They believe they have achieved success, are proud and do not want to peek behind the curtains because they do not want to risk their perceived eminence.

Meanwhile this labor of self-validation is skimmed in real-world rewards. Classic capitalism. Create a captive market then monetise it. The beauty of this market is that there is an implicit threat of irrelevance preventing people from dropping out. The standard resource which gives the currency its validity, its tradeability is our idea of self. We underpin this currency with our idea of personal existence. We are all one way or another terrified of non-existence and this makes it also a currency of fear. We terrorise each other into believing existence is social, and mass socialised. Which makes it not only an effective currency but also a religion. So we are doubly-bound by this feudalism. Church and state are collapsed back into the same system of self/serfdom. We have been taught(in the west at least) to worship at the altar of our own ego and this altar requires tithe. It is monetised. This is a secular religion, or at least it is a religion with an infinite pantheon. We are self-publishing now. Facebook et.al are publishing enterprises. We all write our own good book.

We are tantalised by possible eminence. We gain followers. This is very particular language. It is the language of emancipation to describe shackles. A share. A like. these are goodwill words. Words of belief and generousity. Everything is couched in positivity. The illusion cannot contain negativity or the hypnotism will break. Hence: no dislike button. No alert when someone de-friends you. These alerts are reserved for the subsistence of positive self-identity.  A notification is a little berry, a message a larger one. A friend request or a follower the juciest of all, but ultimately substance-less. These rewards are promoted to you and you consume your own subservience. A friend request is like a nod from a prince or a wink from a celebrity. A tantalising hint that you exist in the same universe and that maybe just maybe that eye contact is tacit indication that you could one day be that princely figure or a celebrity yourself, but only if you work harder for the status quo. Maybe you could be royalty invested with the righteousness of true faith.

But we are all still in this fucking cubicle, working for nothing more than the idea of relevance. Modern serfdom.

That is what I think of facebook.

Anyway, hah. Sorry to barf that all over the floor. The unsolicited conspiratorial ramblings of caffeinated discontent.

i have come to the conclusion that I am too old to be considered young. This week I was told that Facebook is for old people and snapchat and Instagram is for kids. So I decided to regain my youth by turning on MTV. I couldn't relate to a single show. Then I tried VH1, and again not a single show interested me. Instead I ended up watching Tanked, and Penn and Teller's Fool Us.

I actually enjoyed watching the boks get beaten, Had money on Japan to win by a PC 2 points. I suspect a few folks won't be in the office this week...
