Iread about this as well, and I really think it is a pity. You ask me, I think they should have shut the Harley factory instead....
Seriously, the Buell's may have some flaws, but I like their ideas and think they make some pretty interesting bikes. I rode the XB12S a couple of years back and really liked it, except for how the Sportster engine would shake at idle. I was really tempted by the 1125, but the build quality let it down, which is something that would not be too difficult to improve on.
As to Agusta, they make some of the most atractive bikes ever. I was so close to buying a Brutale 910S last year, and it is a bike I really want in my garage some day.
But there are many more in trouble out there. Moto Morini are in trouble, and seriously if you get a chance to ride a Corsaro like mine you will understand how iportant it is that they stick around.
However, cruisers like Harleys, who needs them?

They are like NASCAR. Old technology, loud, and slow. It's no wonder some 'mer-a-kins like 'em.

Yeah, and the worst thing is that given the prices they charge for those things they have by far the biggest profit margins! What do you pay for a 1000cc sportsbike in the US? Something like $12k. And how much for a HD?
I suppose you can't blame HD for making and selling these bikes since they indeed bring them the biggest profits, but I think the real problem is the US bike market in general. We pay over $20k for a 1000cc sportsbike.

You can buy a NEW 08/09 Honda CBR1000rr (fireblade to you) for $8K right now...$6500 for 600rr
Bike sales are in the shitter though....down over 50% from last year.
HD start about $17K...and I can't figure out how those POS can cost that much. Same shocks, motor, frame, tanks, controls for the last 30 years or something.

You have got to be kidding!!!!! $8k for a new Blade. Fuck, with the dollar being on par with the franc, that is $14k less than here!!!!! I would pick up a supersport 600 as a track bike tomorrow at those prices!
The sales are way down here too, but prices are stable.
