Hi everyone, not really sure if this belongs in the politics area or general forum, but I really wanted to get your thoughts on what has been happening in Winnipeg over the last year or so.

Well a little background to this city for people who don't know it. Winnipeg is basically divided into two parts, there is the north end and the south end. The south end is where I live and everyone I know basically lives, it's fairly safe and clean. The north end however is the exact opposite. There are open random shootings, drunken people passed out on the streets in broad daylight, people walking around with their private parts hanging out trying to get someone to have sex with them. All the housing is run down and it is extremely dangerous for someone like me (young white female)

Now I used to work in the north end when I first started out in insurance and could not believe the people in that area, vulger disgusting and randomly violent, but nothing really THAT bad ever happened. I gained employment in my area of the city but maintained my part time waitressing job in the north end because it was ok. Everything started to change over the past year however, the drunks became more aggressive. The cirminals that used to hang out in the restaurant where I worked were never the vulgar or vicious type and all quite liked me, but these new criminals, the drunks and random thieves were violent and threatening. I felt unsafe with increasing intensity with prostitutes soliciting business, me having to call 911 a few times and finally the straw that broke the camel's back, a gang shooting just down the street. I quit my job and a few weeks after I heard that cabs will no long pick up people in the north end of the city, it is just THAT bad.

Now that alone doesn't seem that bad, but what is now worrying me are several things.

1. The violence is starting to move into my area of the city, with home invasions, rapes and murders also random shootings. I see with increasing frequency the homeless people and other unsavory lowlifes have even managed to move into my apartment building because the rent is affordable. My area is in part controlled by another group of criminals, but they are just in it for profitability. Before they used to keep the streets clean of these people, but now I guess it is even getting too much for them to handle.

2. The racial war that this violence has created in the city is what really scares me. There have always been tensions between aboriginals and caucasians in this city, but I have never seen it as heated as it has gotten because of the violence. Everyone is blaming the aboriginals because that is all you see on the streets. You go into the north end and every drunk seems to be native, ever vulgar person seems to be native, every crime committed seems to be native so I can see why it is easy to point a finger and blame. For my part I even admit, before I came to this city I used to think the native culture was fascinating and beautiful, but the natives that I have encountered here are exactly the opposite. What is worse is that $800 of my paycheque a month (more than my monthly rent) is taken to taxes and seeming distributed amongst these lowlifes who don't appreciate it and just use it to enable their userous lifestyle. I have a friend for example who was laid off from her job and decided to go on welfare. She has been living off of it for about a year now, has no intention of getting a new job and is completely content mooching off of the system. She lives on maybe like $200 less a month than I do and I make well above minimum wage. It disgusts me how simple her life is because she's lazy!

From what I have heard there is tension amongst the aboriginal community because they feel that not enough is being done to help them and they were here first, this is their land. They feel like society has turned its back on them and that they are being discriminated against because of the colour of their skin. They also claim that the majority of the violence is from immigrant and biker gangs which opperate in the city and that they are unfairly being blamed for the crime because they do not have the money to pay off the authorities.

Thankfully I am educated, so I can appreciate that there is alot more going on than what you see on the surface, but other people are ignorant and in my opinion a racial war within the city is just months away. There is a culture in north America that means that people are not accountable for their actions and always quick to blame everyone but themselves. Everyone thinks that society OWES them something instead of thinking "I want something, let me do what I need to do to get it!" In my opinion this is responsable for what is happening. Society is becoming out of control, children have no values or morals and are commiting increasingly horrendous acts to get into these local gangs and soon no place in this city will be safe to live. What's worse is that no one can discipline them because they are young offenders!

A lot of random, jumbled up thoughts I know...

What do you guys think?

I blame American television. well, only a little. The brewing racial war you imagine is just starting has been brewing for a long time. And in the abo's view, started with the arrival of the european.

I'm also wonderiung hoe other people you know feel about this because if I understand correctly, you moved back recently after spending quite a few years away. The perception of a long time resident, is it a bit different about the last year bneing significantly worse? Could the world economic problems be a factor?

Just thinking out loud. And I'm tired, so perhaps not as sharp an insight as I would like.
