Post by glendo Sat Mar 20 2010, 03:23

with the advent of the human race hitting plague proportions this century, i have thought about another dilemma.

human migrations. they are already starting to be the biggest in human history do to people wanting a better life for themselves. political, economic, social and ecological refugees are going to be the very hot topic of this century in more way than one.

1. do you think that a developed country has the right to say who can and cannot immigrate into it's borders?

2. do you think that the refugee has the right to choose which country it decides to live in?

3. do you think it bad that a country will say " no refugees allowed" ? what if they are looking after there own citizens wishes?

4. does the UN have power over the countries governments to force them into taking refugees?

im just thinking as we start to approach water, food, rescource security stress... do you think a country will announce to the world: 'no more'! ?
what do you think the ramifications would be if a country does just that?

if the planet is going to have billions more people here, they are going to have to move where the resources and wealth is to survive. this is going to impact on who lives there now.

i put this to the table for your thoughts

1- yes, so does a less developed country

2- Nope, you're a refugee, beggars can't be choosers.

3- No- however, you have to remember that you will then get to watch live video of children starving to death while Christian Ammanpour reminds the world that your country expressly refused to help. So don't be surprised when we treat you like genocidal bigots.

4- No

The problem with the "no more" thing is that you would have to then isolate yourself on so many fronts, a bit like North Korea. Are you prepared to do without things you don't make in country?

i raised this topic after watching a report on tv about how many people are hiding in france trying to get to the UK. they even try to walk under the channel to get there. it was about african migration into europe, through france and italy, and to gibraltar.

and we have a boat refugee problem that is growing at the moment too. the US is probably numb to all this with the mexican border.

Aren't we all immigrants, or decendants of immigrants of one sort or another?

Borders are just man made lines in the sand, ultimately people should be allowed to go where they wish. Why wouldn't the "have not people" want to migrate to the "have countries", as people have done for millenia. Follow the money so to speak.

You and your ancestors moved to a country and are now comfortable living off that land and it's opportunities but you would deny others that opportunity?

Wanna give Australia back to the abos? hehe, and we'll leave, go back to europe, and let the native Americans have their land back. And then there is Palestine.....

I'm not saying we should leave, only that we really have no right to deny others their will to emmigrate.

Ds, im talking about big numbers of world population/ and big number migrations we are going to have in the next 50 years, not about racism. i think there is going to be a point where some countries will just shut the doors, as they will not be able to take anymore in due to welfare, health, safety and social limitations.

What do you mean big numbers?

I'm not talking about racism either.

Typically immigrants are the hardest working segments of any society. In terms of population, most western countries aren't even close to being maxed, socio-economically or by land mass.

The next big migration will be the moon and then Mars, maybe even in my lifetime.

It's the human spirit.

Why is there no delete button for a post that was addressed wrongly?

Yes, 70 to 20 years ago.

Go back to England and see the latest batch of immigrants, asylum seekers, we now pay out more in welfare linked payments (not pensions for OAP) than we receive income tax revenue.

Immigration should be allowed, and controlled. If you follow the rules, and can prove that you can provide some sort of improvement to the country then you should be allowed entry.
