Coinciding with my wife's plans to attend the Frankfurt book fair, I will be taking a rare holiday and on the bucket list is a tour (or two) of the old Ring, which I have booked.  I will be in that area between the 8th and 12th, with some other plans TBA for another week, MAYBE Berlin.  But Nordschleife is ON, practicing daily now in a Toyota 86GT in Gran Turismo6.  Funny thing that is happening, now that I am *slowing down* trying VERY HARD not to crash and stay to the right... (incredulous voice)  my lap times are coming down.  How is this possible... like dropping between 4-7 seconds at a time....????  Slow-in, fast-out only goes so far, or I just never realized how costly "rushing the apex" really is.  Live and learn.

Hey Cine!

Good to hear from you. That does indeed sound like a plan, and something I still have to do. Let us know if you decide to head a little bit further south, like to Geneva. There is always a guest room available to a couple of Shamuists!

My booking is for a reconnaissance lap in a BMW M3 with a driver, then 4 laps in a GT86 (about the same size and weight of our current drive, which is a 2012 A4 Quattro 2.0T) with a company called "RentRaceCar".
Is Sabine someone I should know or get to know?

I will keep that in mind, as there is a proposal to head south through the Brenner (by train) to Firenze.

Not as though we are "fleeing war criminals" or anything, though... tongue

Sabine Schmitz is a bit of a Nurburgring legend...

What Henrik said...in spades...
And definitely worth watching again...!

Question: Sabine was driving that van with what look like "standard" road tyres.
Was that detail part of Jezzer's challenge?

Hey Cine, I just realized you are coming in October! When I first read the dates I was thinking April. That is a good thing as it gives lots of time for trying to plan something...

I have yet to go around the Nordschleife. I still get mad when think of my trip to the Nurburgring F1 in 2000. Arriving at the track we met up with a friend from Mclaren. That's when he tells me I should have gotten there the day before as I could have gone around the Nordschleife with Bernd Schneider in the Mercedes WTC car!!!!!! Aaaargh!! So, unfinished business....

Yes, unfinished business would be a bit of an understatement.
Thanks for the Sabine clip! She's a "vocal" girl! And, yeah, if you're trying to beat 10 minutes and 9:53 is on the clock as you go around the little carousel, you are done, even if you are just trying to make that "Audi" bridge. Its all uphill and there are two more apexes, even if they are opening up in succession. Hurry it a little and the first one messes up the second one... you know how it goes. But Clarkson is not wrong that she might be a welcome addition to the team. They need to shake up the formula a bit, I think.

Anyway, I have been driving the course in GT5 for a couple of years now (AMG Academy missions) and GT6 since before Christmas -- have pretty much finished what is available in the game -- the Goodwood hill climb keeps offering more cars and times. That Festival would also be on the bucket list, at least to attend for a day or so. Southern England, Stonehenge, Spitfires, Rolls Royce nearby... any part of this "not fun?"
An acquaintance of mine runs a couple of Peugeot dealerships in the UK -- and I don't think he's ever attended, so maybe sometime in the next couple of years. There's no time but the present.

Meanwhile, you sort of know my schedule, we arrive in Frankfurt just prior to the book fair opening up, and other than the 9th, I have an open schedule.

So it is with a large measure of disappointment that I have finally relented and cancelled the whole European trip for this fall. For the last two months its has been on-again, off-again and I cannot continue explaining and trying to work around something that appears to be a huge boulder in the rapids as far as the fall production schedule is evolving, at least in my market.

So removing it and probably from my bucket list as well is just plain expedient. Pisses me off.

So sorry to read this. Cine, no need to rule it out though, just make it a spur of the moment thing when the time is right!
