Re: 2014 Launches
Nicked from Autosport's Craig Scarborough:
The look of the nose of 2014's Formula 1 cars has already been a major talking point, but Lotus caused a fresh stir by releasing a rendering of its new E22, which features a very different philosophy.
AUTOSPORT has learned that the aggressive 'twin tusk' arrangement caused problems for the team in completing crash testing.
But this hurdle has been overcome and Lotus will be ready to go in time for the second pre-season test in Bahrain.
The rules mandating a single nose tip, to be mounted far lower than previously and with a minimum cross section, were introduced for safety reasons.
The other cars that have so far been revealed have featured the 'anteater' nose, which forms the nose tip with a finger-like extension.
Lotus's twin tusk arrangement eschews this philosophy and stretches the wording of the rules to the limit.
In order to meet the single lower nose tip regulation, the two tusks are of unequal length, so the longer one forms the mandatory nose tip, while the other is short enough to avoid being considered part of the nose tip by the regulations.
This leaves each tusk to act as a crash structure, the front wing mounting pylon and then, as they slim narrow the rear of the car, also become turning vanes.
This means the unavoidable obstruction of the mandatory nose tip is made into a multi-purpose device.
The design may present slightly more total cross sectional area to the airflow, but places the obstruction in the most beneficial location.
The Mac looks seriously weird...!
Interesting how Lotus, Ferrari, and Mac have reached just different conclusions...

No idea. When I looked at your post the link did not end with [/img], so I tried to fix it but it still didn't work.
What I don't get is how those noses can function as crash structures.

That toro rosso nose is rather phallic.
Depending on the composite structure it could be like a crumple zone in the head on impact, absorbing a lot of energy as it collapses.

Day one of testing at Jerez with the new cars.
It will be intersting to see how things start to look when they all get the initial bugs shaken out and get some consistent running going.

Ericsson is new. I think Guiterrez was a test driver last season. Everyone was on the grid last season.
From the linked article it sounds like many teams are having some shake down issues. There are many new systems at work here so I won't be surprised if there ends up being a lot of reliability issues in the first part of the season.

Re: 2014 Launches
I'm sure you've all seen the news, but Renault are in a fair amount of trouble.
The engine is apparently producing vibrations they hadn't seen in dyno testing.
Further, there are component life issues.
Rumours, and I do emphasise the word rumours, are:
- that the Jerez power unit has a lifespan of 250km - interesting considering a race distance (apart from Monaco) is over 300km
- performance was limited to 75% (some cars were apparently not even running ERS). Pushing beyond 75% would seriously compromise component life of the power unit
- 15-20 weeks required to fix the issues
Again, just unconfirmed rumours.
However, Renault/RBR/STR/Caterham press conferences do seem to indicate that there are some serious issues that they don't understand.
Perhaps the truth is somewhere in the middle.
Red Bull have even bigger worries.
They have packaging issues, suffering from over-heating and software/hardware integration with the power unit.
Overheating is a serious problem with the new power units. Further, ambient temperature in Jerez climbed only to 15°C. Imagine the issues they may have in Bahrain next week?!
They're in a real mess.
They achieved 21 'laps' - now that count includes all the installation laps and the few times the car stopped on circuit after a handful of corners.
In reality, they did no more than 5 'flying laps' where they completed 3 sectors in a row.
Adrian Newey left the circuit half way through day 3 of the test to literally go back to the 'drawing board'.
Williams, a curious case.
They had Renault power last year (only 2 seasons), and strangely jumped to Mercedes half-way through their second season.
Renault have won the previous 4 WDCs and 4 WCCs.
Were they privy to Renault problems? Or given RBR were Renault's priority partner/customer they felt they weren't getting enough of a say?
Lotus
They've lost staff, down from 500 last season to at least 430 and potentially 400 members.
Their number 1 driver left, their team manager left and a few key technical people (James Allison for one).
Money issues definitely.
They decided not to show up at Jerez.
They said they wanted further development time, perhaps the lack of funds attributed to that or perhaps they were privy to the Renault power unit issues. What's the use of showing up in Jerez if all the car can manage is 4 laps, and at massively reduced speed no less?
Develop for a further 4 weeks and hopefully arrive in Bahrain with a solution to the problems.
The most interesting pre-season testing in years, perhaps even ever.

Nice piece, Playlife.
Curiously, Autosport haven't hammered the Renault issue.
Maybe they're keeping their powder dry...?
Yup, Willies might have landed where the grass is indeed greener, just for a change.
I wonder how Honda are feeling just now?
Due to join forces with Mac next season, meanwhile watching as the sludge is hitting every non-rotating-but-meant-to-rotate-thingy.
This new tech is a wild leap and no mistake.

Re: 2014 Launches
Cheers Gelert.
It's very exciting. There's definitely more questions than answers after Jerez.
The Bahrain test will be even more telling than Jerez.
Lap times obviously meant nothing.
Although there's no way to know, but apparently no one was running the full rev limit (to 15k rpm); understandable as out-right speed right now is not important.
Reliability will definitely be the story of the season.
The restriction of 5 Power Units for the entire season is also making me think that most drivers will be getting a penalty of some sort this year.
There are 6 components which comprise of the 'Power Unit' (goodbye to the term 'engine'!).
They can be inter-changed as they sit fit but I just can't fathom a single car using only 5 for the season. The fact that the PU is made up of 6 components means that if there is any component which shows any sign of weakness that you're more vulnerable to be penalised.
Red Bull suffered tremendously with KERS over the last few years. It's not a surprise they have even bigger issues now when the unit is 10 times more powerful (80bhp for ~7 secs to 160 bhp for ~30 secs).
The Red Bull physically looks like it has less cooling ducts than Merc powered cars. Sounds like that needs to be changed.
Ferrari powered cars look like they require less cooling than the Merc runners too.

That Like a turbine spooling down. Thanks for that one Playlife.
The fuel economy is another thing that will make the season interesting. We could be seeing something more like older qualifying with the cars using full power in quals but dialed back for fuel economy during the races, not unlike having a qualifying engine.

Definitely.
I just hope that the timing and on-screen graphics reflect these changes.
They have to nail it with the appropriate data otherwise it's kinda pointless if we have no idea what is going on underneath.
They need to showcase the focus of these regulations, that is, energy recovery systems.
We really don't need to know rpm anymore - better to be replaced with instantaneous fuel flow rate.
Further, would be nice to have a graphic to see what is being used; ICE/MGU-H/MGU-K/Power Store etc. as you find in some hybrid cars.
Obviously they won't give us how much fuel is left, but if we have things like fuel flow rate, or just simply throttle traces we'll be able to see who's trying to save fuel (IIRC we already have throttle).

Re: 2014 Launches
And here's another "Ooops":
Kamui Kobayashi believes that a GP2 car would be quicker than his Caterham F1 machine in its current state after two pre-season tests.
The Japanese racer ended the first Bahrain F1 test with a best lap of 1m39.8s, which is four tenths of a second slower than last year's GP2 pole at the same circuit for 2013 champion Fabio Leimer.
While most Renault-powered teams are focusing on making their cars reliable at the moment, Kobayashi is keen to help Caterham find some more speed at next week's final pre-season test.
"We are not in race conditions here, but if we were in race conditions I think I should bring a GP2 car," Kobayashi told reporters in Bahrain.
"The lap time is still quicker in GP2. We need to work, but in this moment if we were to race, I think it's not Formula 1.
"When you look at the lap time, I need to be worried. I cannot be happy, but I have to think about what we can do.
"Time is very limited, and we need to think about reliability, but also performance. We have to try as much as we can."
The ex-Toyota and Sauber man added that he is not particularly interested in having to rely purely on reliability for Caterham to land more competitive results than it has experienced so far in F1.
When asked by AUTOSPORT if a slow car that was reliable could enable the team to score its first points, Kobayashi said: "I am not looking for that.
"I'm looking more for the potential for us to catch up. This is the most important part of why I am here.
"I'm not just thinking about finishing the race, of course I also need performance.
"This year is the biggest chance for this team.
"There is a lot of chance and possibility, but at the moment we are a little bit off the pace compared with the other teams on the development side."
