Im living the dream baby
Hi to all, its been a while. Got an email from Henrik out of the blue and here I am. Well Ive rekindled my boyhood racing ambitions and have taken up slotcar racing again. Below is my TransAm and CanAm cars, albeit in 1/24 scale. The T/A series has been running for four years now, since 2009. Ive managed to come 3rd, 4th and 2nd. Always the bridesmaid. The CanAm was run last year 2011 for the first time and I managed to hold on to win that series!! I chose the Roger Penske 69 Camaro driven by Mark Donahue as my weapon of choice and for the CanAm car I chose the McLaren M8 driven by Danny Hulme.

Welcome back Rick!!!
I'm actually a bit jealous of your slot car racing. The cars look great and you seem to be doing pretty well on the track too.

Welcome back rick!
I had hunted you down to a slot car racing forum but not sure if I ever made contact. It's been a while...like a decade I think...
Great pics! I stopped collecting scalextric cars probably about 15 years ago but still have a small collection of F1 cars. Looking at pictures and videos makes me wanna start up again.

Hi Henrik and PL,
Yes its been a while. Not sure if I can motivate myself to have arguements about F1 anymore. I lost interest after Mac got caught cheating a few years back. Nothing wrong with cheating but for god's sake if youre going to do it, do it right....and dont get caught.
Henrik, Ill be seeing you in Lucca Italy in early June?? One or two sugars in your cuppoccino?
cheers

Welcome back Rick. Did you swiss cheese the Camaro like Penske did back in the day?

Ha ha daSilva. Yes Im running 200 pounds under weight....or whatever that works out to be in 1/24th scale. The car runs some inventive rule interpretations...but let me stress that it runs within the rules as they are written. Unfortunately no amount of creative engineering can make up for my lack of driving talent I race with some pretty bloody good slotters, whose driving talents make me look like Lewis Hamilton...although Im hoping that Im not that much of a prat.

Welcome Back Rick! Long Time.
Cool slot cars. You know I saw both of the real versions of those run in Riverside at the LA Times Grand Prix races in the '60s. For several years my dad took me and my brothers to the races there every year. CanAm was the Bomb, and those cars were wonderful to watch on that circuit.

There's a great Can-Am documentary if you haven't already seen it called 'Can-Am - A Speed Odyssey' - in colour too!

Re: Im living the dream baby
I'll have to get a copy of that. Thanks PL. Just watching the trailer was a stroll down memory lane.
The Canadian/American Challenge Cup Series (The real name of the series) was an amazing series. The regulations were minimal: two seats, a minimum weight no one could even get close to, maximum tread widths that were huge, and little else. A whole field of screaming big blocks was as wonderful in it's own way as an entire grid of 3L V10s turning 18.5K.

Hi Rick! Nice to see you around, glad you're having fun with those. Strange to see a Camaro with right hand drive.

You've got your screen set on "active flip", Gueuze.gueuzeman wrote:Strange to see a Camaro with right hand drive.
It's clearly a left-hand drive, run by Oramac Oconus and Eksnep Regor Meat...
Yo Rick - welcome back! We're not backward here, really! It's just a PC Screen set-up issue...

Re: Im living the dream baby
Sorry to disappoint you guys but there is nothing wrong with the software etc. It is indeed a RHD Camaro. We run mostly clockwise tracks and its one of those Roger Penske advantages. Truth be known I only had some RHD interiors left in my slot parts bin so RHD it was.

Re: Im living the dream baby
Thanks for those links PL. That brings back memories. the '71 race was neat. We called that L&M Lola that Stewart was driving the Snub Nose Lola. I believe later that season a front wing was added because the basic design was not generating enough front end grip.
This is some sports car footage from where we used to sit at Riverside Raceway. From turn 6 you could watch the cars come down through the esses, around turn 6 which was a double apex with a crown in the middle, head down to turn 7, and this footage is very late using turn 7B onto the main straight. You can see a glimpse of the short chute up to the origonal turn 8 that made the main straight a good 50% longer. As the Can-Am cars got faster they shortened the straight to bring the speed down.

Man I loved watching the Can-Am cars. They were really something else.
