Greece?
Man, I really wonder what G-Pap is smoking. With his surprise announcement last night that he wants to have a referendum in Greece about accepting the recently agreed deal, he has really messed things up for Europe.
What a nut case!

Re: Greece?
From his point of view, wasn't it a good card to play at this stage...?
I repeat - From HIS point-of-view...
As for the rest of us: What numpty thought that it was a wise idea to throw good money after bad...?
However, now that NATO have ceased their air-manoeuvres over Libya, they've surely got some spare capacity.
Perhaps a "No-Fly Zone" over Greece (and perhaps Spain as well?) could provide a solution to all of these problems...?
OK - so it would fuck-up the tourism, but might get some money out of those super-rich tax-dodging private-aircraft-owning bastards who currently aren't paying ANY tax.
Must dash now - I need to return to my tent and bring down yet another member of the full card-carrying capitalist jack-booting-scum known as the "Church of England Clergy"...save me a space in the Cafe Nuit queue will ya...?

Not sure how it was a good card to play from his point of view either. He's lost any international support, his own ministers are turning from him, his opposition want him to resign and the referendum doesn't have a chance of going through.
Seems to me that playing that card was total career suicide, and then some!

Re: Greece?
Just caught a bit of this on the radio on the way home.
Is this some kind of ploy to wash his hands of culpability for the whole mess? Even if he does get removed from office, will it give him space (rightly or wrongly) to proclaim that he wasn't complicit in the whole affair?
Then he will get some fat appointment to some multi-national conglomerate.....

But apart from that Mrs. Lincoln...did you enjoy the play...?Henrik wrote:Not sure how it was a good card to play from his point of view either. BBC news this morning reported that he had support from his ministers (but perhaps not his opposition!). They did say that any referendum on this in Greece would not happen until January 2012, and he has to survive a vote-of-no-confidence this coming Friday.
My point has been admirably illustrated by my Rt.Hon Friend, the member for G-land, and I quote: "this (is) some kind of ploy to wash his hands of culpability for the whole mess". Oh yes, indeedy - the minute he put this up for a Public Vote, he diluted the blame for any crisis by, er, how ever many people are eligible to vote in Greece.
He was finished anyway, due to the financial situation - this way he goes out with a bang, having stuck it to "The Man" - aka Mr & Mrs Euro - Sarkozy & Merkel (S&M?)

Re: Greece?
I suppose he can do what he wants, and the arguments that the people should have a say in the matter could hold some water. Dictatorships are some much simpler, but then Greece already had a referendum to get rid of that back in '74.
My only problem with it is that he should have mention this little tidbit last week as the deal was being negotiated. But then I suppose there would never have been a deal...

I wouldn't tend to believe someone who is in the process of welshing on their debts. The reality is people/Nations get behind and/or make poor choices. It's how you handle things at that point that show who you really are.
Meh...my business has been taking some hard hits recently, and I'm bit pissed. I wish I could get this kind of support and help. Such is life....well there's no reason why this can't be fun.

So he survived the vote of confidence. Greece might be even more screwed up than I thought.

Looks like the Euro might be toast. odd thing is that I think it helps Europe a ton. Now the currencies will revert back, and that will make the dollar stronger.

Re: Greece?
anyone else weirded out by the timing of the latest economic downgrades of most of the critical countries in the euro?
seems to me like its just in time for them all to default in an attempt to guide/flush the whole world into depression...
