It looks good, but it will never be shown in the states unless it is in an artsy theatre. What was with him needing to have his gloves taken off? And did i see Emmo as a pall bearer?

Yup, you can see Emmo, Berger, Prost, Barrichello, Herbert and JYS.

The gloves footage I've never seen before. It must be from 1991 Brazilian GP where he suffered from extreme cramping, he literally could not get out of the car. There's the famous footage on the podium where he looks to still be in pain as he lifts the trophy above his head. One of his best drives ever, battling a gearbox issue with Riccardo Patrese bearing down on him.

I'll buy it on Blu-Ray if I can.

Playlife is correct about the Brazilian GP and the cramping. The thing about this movie is that there is a lot of footage that has never been seen before and it is shown chronologically in documentary format. Personally I can't wait, although I understand the last 15 minutes are dedicated to his death, that's going to be tough to watch with dry eyes.

Yup same, not looking forward to the last part of the movie. Took me a good 10 years or so to get the courage to watch the 1994 San Marino GP again.

I hope they don't slam Prost too much. I've read countless books and depending on the viewpoint, both Senna and Prost could be as bad as each other. I'm hoping it will be a balanced view.

I noticed in the trailer they showed the 1990 Japanese GP driver's briefing where Senna cracks it over the discussion regarding what to do if the chicane is overshot (and rightly so). There's a clip of it on youtube if you're interested, shame we don't get to see footage from driver's briefings more often.

The Speedtv crew mentioned a press conference where Senna told everyone what he thought about the FIA for over 20mins. I hope that is in there.

Might be the press conference in Adelaide after the Japanese GP. I've seen portions of it, not sure if I've seen the whole thing though. Pretty captivating viewing.

Apparantly Balestre is portrayed as the bad guy, not Prost or Senna. Rightfully so in my opinion.

My High School girlfriend is the News Editor for the NPR affiliate in Park City. She gets comped to any of the movies she wants to see at the festival.

She said Senna was a really good film and she's not into racing.

I want to see it. I'll probably wait and have Jill put it in her netflix cue...

Got the movie, but I am struggling to find any English subtitles.

There is also a confusion as to the length of the movie. There is on 2h43m version, and one 104 minute version. From comments that I have read, the shorter one is the better one.

I downloaded a rip of the extended 2h43min version ([ www.Speed.Cd ] - Ayrton Senna Beyond The Speed Of Sound 2010 BDRip XviD AC3-SANTi, 2.84Gb) which includes portuguese and Italian subs, and additionally found the english subs for the non-English commentaries for this torrent. Although I haven't watched the short version of the film, I suppose the editors cut out most of the Brazilian commentaries regarding Senna, clips regarding the perception the Brazilians had of him (a god-like figure,) also perhaps some of the 6 Prost segment interviews that appear in the uncut version - and maybe some of the pre-race pilot briefings, which I was somehow surprised to watch there, that make Ballestre look like true tyranical ass he was.

I have to say, tho, I could have watched even a much longer version of the documentary easily... an extraordinarily gripping film.

So, we watched the extended 2:40 version of the movie last weekend. Now I get what some people were saying about this version not flowing so well, as the cut from the historical footage to some of the interviews was a bit abrubt at times, and did sort of cut the mood setting the film was displaying.

I enjoyed it, and it made me sad. I have accepted his death a long time ago, and don't linger on what could have been, however watching the movie reminded me yet again how for me F1 was dying at the time already. The frustration seen in Senna and the Williams team at the beginning of 94 when they had done away with all the electronics, and it was clear to them that some other teams had not, was a perfect reflection of my own frustrations at the time. There were a number of memorable fights and individual drives to come from some drivers after 94, but the direction F1 had taken could only lead to its end.

What I really enjoyed was to what extent the movie displayed Balestre for the prick he was. At the same time, it bothered me that after the footage from the driver meeting in Japan, when Piquet made his comment and then Balestre went on to say that his decision is always the right one, the movie just sort of dropped the whole Balestre/FIA thing. It would have been interesting to see how this all developed after Balestre being replaced and what was Senna's view on the change.

All in all, it was a nice walk down memory lane, but I was not blown away by it.

You'll enjoy it.

Listened to an interview with JYS yesterday and he mentioned that Ayrton the infamous interview with JYS in Adelaide 1990 (just after the Suzuka part 2 event). After Jackie's question (they show it in the movie), Ayrton was clearly offended and after the interview finished Ayrton declared he would never speak to Jackie again.

Around 1.5-2 years after, Ayrton phoned JYS and apologised. He admitted to JYS that he lied in the interview and purposely took Prost out. JYS also commented that he still would ask that same question (and I agree with JYS's question). After Ayrton apologised, he asked JYS to help him to improve safety and they would talk regularly about it.

Was it any surprise after how Prost and Balestre behaved in '89 to conspire against Senna. Just desserts. Prost started it, Senna finished it.

Suzuka 1990
Senna may have felt he was justified for his actions but I don't believe in revenge. Senna was a devout Catholic, and that goes against the faith (as far as I was taught in my Catholic upbringing). An eye for an eye? No.

Taking out an opponent is wrong full stop.
Taking out an opponent at over 200km/hr is down right dangerous.
Taking out an opponent at over 200km/hr in front of the whole field is just plain stupidity.

There is no justification WHATSOEVER for that driving. Risking his life, other driver's lives and the crowds lives is inexcusable.

It was only a few years later a crash at turn 1 at Suzuka in F3000 in similar circumstances (not intentionally though) that claimed the life of the 2nd driver.

The collision, 1989
Prost definitely turned in early. But I believe Senna was too far behind to try that move. The 2 laps before he was much closer but didn't have a go. I watched full race recently (cracking race!!). Prost said before the race he wasn't going to give him any room at all, so it wasn't unexpected. I believe Prost crossed the line, but I think Senna made a risky move. It was clear it was a matter of time before he got past and I think he should have waited. Still, can understand that you'd be pissed as a Senna fan that it finished like that.

The DQ
The DQ at Suzuka in 1989 - I wrote a thread a while back here but no one replied to it. It was a genuine question as to the official reason why Senna was DQ that race. He short cut the chicane (because you should NEVER go backwards), but on the barriers of the short-cut there was a big STOP sign.

I've been trying to find out for years if that was the reason why he was DQ. It wasn't uncommon that if you take a short-cut, you do a stop/go on the spot to ensure you gain no advantage. It occurred at another circuit around the time (now gone blank as to which one) where a marshal actually would force the car come to a complete halt before allowing it to move on.

If this was the case at Suzuka, then Senna deserved the DQ. If not, then he didn't.

Pole Position
Not sure if it was common practice to ask pole position to be changed according to the desire of the pole man. If so, then yes he was dealt an unfair blow.
