F1: Austin, Texas To Host US GP
, Austin is an "it" city? Fine dining in Texas? This will be pure comedy gold convincing those boys to see a bunch of foreigners race those Euro cars! This is a city that doesn't even have 1 major sports team (Football, Basketball, Hockey, or Baseball).
Bernie Ecclestone has used his website to announce that a US GP will be held in Austin, Texas from 2012 to 2021. It will be the first F1 event held in the state since the one-off race at Dallas in 1984.
The news comes just days after the Monticello facility in New York State told the media that it was pitching for a race.
The Austin event will be promoted by Full Throttle Productions, a company with an involvement in NASCAR. A new facility will be built for the race in what is the USA’s 15th-largest city.
The company’s managing partner, Tavo Hellmund, said in the statement: “We are extremely honored and proud to reach an agreement with the F1 Commercial Rights holder. We have been diligently working together for several years to bring this great event to Austin, the State of Texas, and back to the United States. All parties involved have a great amount of trust and confidence in each other and are committed to establishing the F1 United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas as a prestigious global event.
“This is a case of the right timing in the right place. As many Americans know, Austin has earned a reputation as one of the ‘it’ cities in the United States. Austin features that rare combination of ideal geographic location and beauty. Its fine dining, world-renowned hospitality and excellent transportation infrastructure make Austin ideally suited to host and manage an event of this magnitude.
“Few cities if any on America could rival the connectivity of all the key elements needed for hosting an F1 event as well as Austin. Now, many people around the world will have the opportunity to experience a world-class event, facility and city.”

Bizarre. Texas and F1. Monticedllo, NY? Another headscratcher, except for it's proximity to New York City.
I have trouble seeing how building a brand new facility from scratch is a good investment for one race a year, anywhere.

You do know that Bernie has a 50% share in a certain German Course Designer's Company don't you????? What is good for Bernie's pocket, is good for F1, at least, that is how Bernie see's it.

the reasons why bernie picked texas... they will pay him and tilke to build it... whereas Monticello already exists. doesnt anyone else see the connection between new host countries, and new tracks? except for the valencia street cirucuit, everything last 10yrs has gone to a country that has to build a track, and use tilke to design it... and bernie owns half of the company i believe.

And the tracks suck. Well, to be fair, once in a while Tilke fucks up and does something right....

Austin is a nice city and by Texas standards it has culture and is progressive. I wouldn't be surprised to see a second race announced in the US though.

I like Austin. It's almost like not being Texas.

Even Texans I know don't think it's Texas. They call it "The People's Republic of Austin". Sounds good to me.

I'm not buying it. They have no land purchased, and only a promise from the state for 25mil. How are they going to get a track built in 2years? He'll Texas motor speedway costs 250mil in 1999, imagine the cost now! Finally Bernie didn't even have much to say on the grid while talking to speed.

Re: F1: Austin, Texas To Host US GP
I'm all seriousness, I am not buying it either and I know for a fact people in Austin, both F1 neophytes and veteran fans alike, are not completely sold on the idea. I'm sure finding a suitable piece of land near Austin should not be a problem, but where the hell is the money coming from? As for building the track in 2 years, we could probably open the border just a bit and let my Mexican brothers build it, nothing new there. But again, where's the money?
I'm wondering if Bernie is using this as leverage with someone else here in the states. The Pitpass folks are speculating about Vegas, so who knows.
But still, lay off Austin! Don't make me come and beat you!!

Here I am checking out the Austin track with RacerX (this was from the epic showdown back in 2002 as told in the Diaries of a Madman). See, they can even run a nightrace!!
Here is Team Almighty, with driver 1 and 1B checking out the facility:

NICE!! And I agree with Pabs, there is something fishy with the whole thing.
I mean, BE is involved, need I say more?

Re: F1: Austin, Texas To Host US GP
Let's be honest here, does Austin really want to lower themselves to hosting an F1 race after having hosted a race from the pinnacle of motorsports...a ShamuCroaks world champion kart race!! Nothing will ever measure up to that weekend, which ultimately saw a Tora's Whore winning not just the race but the championship!

I'll bet we could get plenty of Shamuists to a race in Austin too. I'[d find a way to make it.
