F1 2010 Empty F1 2010

Post by DeadCat Wed Sep 22 2010, 15:56

Anyone interested? It's been programmed by CodeMasters (GRID, DIRT 2) unlike F1 2009 and it's got the FIA's approval to used the actual 2010 cars, liveries and tracks.

GRID = good online play with multiple players around the globe. A .torrent is available that will also play online so it's very popular (not always a good thing).

DIRT2 = great driving physics (at least compared to DIRT), and graphics are awesome, playing offline is somewhat boring and playing online is lacking a lot.

If they get the balance of the two right it'll be awesome, if they swing either way it will suck. Personally I'm felling that the speeds reached in F1 cars will surpass the latency experienced for online gaming.

In any case, we should have our copy of F1 2010 up and running by Saturday, we'll no doubt still play GRID from time to time if anyone is up for a private session race in open wheelers.

someone in the iRacing forums did a review of it, basically he said, for the hardcore sim racer its better to save ye money and wait for the williams to come out... otherwise its good for a few beers and a lazy muckaround.

the williams f1 is coming out in november in iRacing, and there will be spa soon too (not sure when exactly, but there are plenty of worthy tracks in the meantime to go on with without all the fia tracks... 4-5 of those are complete shite anyway... bahrain, singapore, valencia, hungaroring, at the very least... scrap em.

if you fancy a topshelf race sim, do ye selves a favour and get into iracing.com... and then lets organise a time to hook up online and do some shamu convoying Very Happy!

Rev, my favourite driving game is still RBR, great on the lowest levels and insane as things get harder. (No driver aids are even offered in the game, you must drive a manual, no TC, no ABS. You can even have an analogue handbrake.)

The reviews on F1 2010 are not looking to good, seems CM's sold their soul for the $'s on this one. GFWL also really sucks donkey dicks.

With regards to iracing, I'll have to check it out; I have all the right hardware and the USD is as weak as I can remember. If it can handle a 350ms latency without disadvantage we could be in for some fun.

roger that... if anyone else joins after you, i suggest using yours and then the preceding account each time there after... starting off, you could use the extra credit more than me getting the gear as you go...

on that note, i would hold off going crazy... better off sticking to the start up content initially to feel it out and then see what might interest you along the lines of license progression, and where you see yourself spending the most time... on that note, the licensing is probably a little weak, it does take a bit of time (although it's no where near as long as used to be with the fast tracking they have now), and it most probably will necessitate a purchase or two that you may not have envisioned floating your boat when you joined, but i reckon everything on the road side is brilliant... though i did used to hate the first rookie car the chevrolet solstice (slowstice)... but every car will teach you something about the tyre model, and every second of track time is valuable... even at an idling roll.

as for the ping...

i operate fine with a stable 266ms to the US servers generally... anything up to around 300-350ms is workable (399+ gets a little iffy) - some dont understand lag in sim racing - most experienced guys do - rookies 50/50... having said that, the prediction code and collision detection is better than anything ive seen in other games online, and imo the guys that copmplain in iracing -a- have no idea about the internet, and -2- don't know how good it is compared to anything else...

the aussie server mayaswell be in my bedroom at 30ms (it's in sydney)... regional areas do have higher pings and some find it difficult to use the US servers and even have high pings on the AUS server... but if you acknowledge and keep an eye on yours and other drivers pings, then its possible to make allowances enough to not to have problems.... the trouble is there are some people that dont know how to race with lag, so you have to get good at seeing those sorts coming and just steering clear of them is safe areas...

but at first, even if your ping was 30ms, i would suggest trying to drive as predictably as possible and try to keep an eye on who's around you on track etc and just try to keep it clean... you wont be able to avoid everyone or everything, but slowly you will start to pull ahead of the rookie level shinanigans and get into a good rythm and go up the license levels... having said that, you dont need to do any of the license progression if you join hosted races,, all you need for that is the content,, the iRating and SafteyRating isn't affected.

but yeah, i can't wait to see you out on track... i reckon your ping'll be fine... or at the very least, its better not to go wondering Wink

and ofcourse, anything you want to know or ask, about what series, car or track to get, or setups, shift points, how to avoid being rearended by n00bs lolz... i love nothing more than starting up a convoy train of cars in a practice session and everyone slowly building up pace... everyone giving their tips, and showing everyone else their lines and places to pass or defend, side by side action, and the inevitable launch off the embankment when it all gets too fun... i dont know what level you think your driving is at, but, myself included, there are alot of guys that are quick in some cars and tracks and have brain explosions at others... the best part is in the tinkering and the getting better, and i like to think everyone has something they could teach someone else, and i personally, aswell as alot of other aussies, dont get our jollies off chasing small (read: ego-fueled) victories... just good fun... atleast, from my most selfish point of view, all i want is to get more people up to speed to make the racing and practice sessions more fun... but yeah, to me its less of a game and more of a hobby... and you will find alot of astonishingly quick and cluey drivers... in that, there is no shame in being 4seconds off the pace Wink

F1 2010 is pure arcade.

Awesome graphics and sound, good for a quick pick up and play.

DC, I'm still a big fan of RBR too. Do you play online?

Post by DeadCat Fri Oct 01 2010, 20:46

Sorry Rev, we did try to sign up but they didn't want our money (some GayPal error), we'll try again soon. F1 2010 is doing my head in at the moment, and on that note:

F1 2010 is shit (not 'the shit' or 'good shit', it's just plain 'shit'), Codemasters is taking a massive hit over this one. The list of bugs is continually growing and it is practically unplayable.

The mains ones that really piss me off consistently are as follows:
- AI drivers don't pit during a race whilst I have to or get disqualified.
- Damage models don't work at all, ABS doesn't disable.
- Driving in the wet on slicks is just as fast as full wets.
- Engineer is a moron (tells you the car in front of you is 10 secs ahead even through you've been less than 1 second behind him for the last 2 laps).
- AI times on track do not reflect qualifying or race times (basically the AI cars are not racing the clock and are only on the track to try and slow you down; = massive fail)

It's really, really bad.

Playlife, I haven't played RBR for a long time now. When I did play it took up so much time it was unreal, I remember having sweat dripping down my face after completing a 20 minute stage; awesome fun.

Can someone please reprogram RBR for DX11 at 1920x1200? That would be ideal, then I would by the G27 racing wheel.

yeah it creates your account name with your name the way it's stated on your credit card... i had to change mine through support (theyre pretty prompt with it), so long as your name still largely reflects whats on your card (ie: your real name, or nic name, or shortened whole name, or something that is an initial letter different to or numbered in a way from a name if it already exists (when someone has the exact same name)... you wont be able to run with deadcat sadly :\... it's to stop multiple accounts and apart from helping to secure accounts it limits racing fraud (ie: join another race after your race with a sacrificial account and take out your main rivals in their race etc)... you're not invited to let anyone else join an official session on your account (other than in a public practice session where its overlooked), they want you to just make a second account... ie: your son or daughters legs now reaches the pedals and they starting to get competant enough to do races of their own... you can get short or long term accounts and you can reactivate them whenever... i guess it's part in parcel with them really trying to push the real world competition aspect of it.

there are alot of things that you might have to manipulate your approach to fit what and the way they provide it... there are alot of ways to skin a cat and i think whats there would be much of a muchness to what anyone else would have it as... ie: getting into it the way it is without focusing on what it could be... but being a network engineer i'm sure you know more about that than i do. Beer

see you in good time Smile

EDIT - wrt F12010, there was talk of CD snapping in the aussie iRacing forums lol

I mow you guys hate the arcade stuff, but Gran Turismo 5 comes out next month. Red bull made a theoretical car called the X1 that is basically an f1 car without any rules.

Rev, I've no issue buying anything else online. If they want me pay a monthly fee for their product (even if I don't use it for 3 months), then I should be the one deciding what I should be called, (provided it's unique). If my real name was 'Dale Eadcat' would they let me use 'DeadCat'?

glendo, CodeMasters have pretty much admitted that the current variant of F1 2010 is a beta test (they did no beta testing before release) and that they have a long list of bugs to work on. They say that a patch will be released addressing most issues.

If you can join an online session where no 'aids' are permitted then there's some good racing, it's the offline career stuff that really lets the game down.

And the graphics are tits, I run 1080p with 8xAA and full everything and it looks awesome.

i guess you could work something out through iR support, but apart from putting your name in the contact details?, the account/driver name is taken straight off the billed card... ie: some guys have their name in all caps for a while until it gets a change request... and there is the occasional young bloke or lesser half that run under their mums or wifes name from having used their card to sign up with etc.

but what about D. Eadcat? Very Happy

just close your eyes and press submit Laughing
besides the aussie dollar is rocking atm...
