Eyjafjallajökull
I am surprised this topic hasn't been opened yet, even if NorthCoast and I were discussing it a bit in the 2 Wheels area, but what the hell is Iceland up to?
Seriously, in 2008 they messed with the banking system, and left a lot of people without their money. Now they are out to kill the European air industry!
It is amazing how a volcano errupting in Iceland can bring Europe to a halt in this way. With the winds starting to change, it may also be North America that gets affected as well.
Yesterday I was looking out at a beautiful blue sky here, and not a single vapour trail. Beautiful, but a bit strange. I am just happy I don't have any trips planned for the time being.

Re: Eyjafjallajökull
Hey there Hen.
It is strange indeed. Remind me, what are the scientists saying about this volcano? Something about how the last time it erupted it went on for years?
We have plenty of volcanoes here. I remember than in the 80's an Eastern Airlines jet flew through a similar cloud of sand and, the guy barely made it to the landing strip. The pilot had burned the engines so much, in order to get some power from them, that by the time they reached the end of the landing strip, he had to call for the tow trucks to get him on account of his engines being dead.
I remember the plane was parked on the side for months while they put new engines on it.

Maybe the airline industry should have some Wright Cyclones around just in case this will be a common occurrence.

Re: Eyjafjallajökull
Seriously? You were planning on coming over when all of Europe was shut down? Damn!!!!
The thing is still coughing, and there are regular airport shutdowns, but much more localized now. Given that we should finally be getting some warmer weather over Europe by the weekend, that means southernly winds and normally the ash cloud should blow up over the North Pole instead of down here...

Actually we could have made it, except Continental cancelled our flight 24 hours before the scheduled departure time, forcing us to cancel our reservations. This was the very day the airspace was reopened. But then they reinstated the flight and didn't tell us. Fuckers.
