I am beginning to get worried about alcochol problems. I used to get by with 1/2 bottle at a meal, now I am easily downing a full one and looking for more Smile

Does anyone know what the FDA daily recommeneded quantity is?

FDA? Those assholes wouldn't even recommend breathing.

As for wine, i actually watched James May (with some guy named Oz) do some wine tour of France and California. It wasn't bad, and helped someone like me understand wine better.

Virgins don't usually wonder if they're pregnant. If you're feeling like you're drinking too much then you probably are. That is not to say alcoholically, but something in you is asking some questions about consumption.

I believe the FDA/AMA stance is 1-2 glasses of RED wine daily help to lower blood pressure and colesterol.

Is that like 1 bottle just for you with dinner, every day? If so, that is way too much! I would say that even if it is not every day, 1 bottle for one person with a meal is still too much. Wine is not to be drunken for your thirst, but for taste to go with a meal. What you should do is have maybe a few glasses of wine, and always also have water to go with your dinner. This way the water is for your thirst and the wine for your taste.

Try drinking less, and if you feel you crave more I would say you have a problem.

I think I am just greedy. Sometimes I'd eat a big steak, close to 0.5kg, and before I notice it, I am past the half bottle. And thankfully it's not every day, mostly weekends. Very Happy

Recently, I switched to seafood and noticed my wine consumption dropped since I don't care too much about wine with fish/shrimp/etc.

Once upon a time you could only crawl, then take a few steps. Now I bet you could walk a mile or more.

Drinking wine is not about satisfying thirst, it's about satisfying your taste buds, and they like and want more.

Oh, maybe that sounds a bit like an addiction thing.

The big question is, are you finding that the additional consumption is getting in the way of other activities, or becoming a priority.

Relax, have a glass of wine.

Its -18c outside and I'm tired from chasing the kids. The Lasagna is coming out of the oven and the garlic bread is going in. I need a drink. I'm going to open a 2006 Gran Coronas Reserva and make sure I finish it.

No, Jill's mom is cooking something and her dad is grilling. They live about 20 minutes from Legoland so they insisted we come by after the park.

Serge Renaud is a famed epidemiologist and the person that discovered in the early 70's the cardiovascular benefit of taking an aspirin a day.

After that, he dedicated his life to the study of the health benefits of wine in particular to the heart an circulatory system. He first published his studies in the Lancet in the late 70's. They show that if a person drinks 1-3 glasses a day he or she will lower his incidence of heart disease by over 40%.

Since then his studies have been verified numerous times including the famed 60 Minutes show called The French Paradox where they explored why it is that the French consume more saturated fat than Americans yet suffer less heart disease and have lower incidences of heart attacks?

One his studies compared Baltimore MD, against the city of Bordeaux, two cities of similar demographics. The people from Bordeaux suffered 55% less heart attacks than those in Baltimore. Its worth noting that the people in Bordeaux drink more red wine than anywhere else in France. On average they drink 4-6 glasses of wine per day, which is almost a bottle. Of course, they don't drink it all in one sitting and they always drink it in combination with food. They drink 2-3 glasses with each meal.

On the other hand, we don't only die of heart attacks. I would think that the level of wine consumption in Bordeaux probably creates other problems. What is the comparison for liver problems between Baltimore and Bordeaux?

Hroak, in fact I was thinking about the Frenchmen the other day when I posted this. For them a bottle at a meal is no big deal. I guess I'll be fine. cheers

Hen, the thing, is...

Wine complements food in a very special way. No, not just on the culture side of it as we all know. The acidity of wine breaks up the fat in food before your body absorbs it. This is the reason a large fondue dinner will not upset your stomach as badly, if you drink plenty of (ideally red, and room temperature) wine with it. The reason for the red wine is because its supposed to be bad for your digestion to drink cold beverages with something as difficult to digest as a cheese fondue. Point is, you would have to really drink wine in great excess before it begins to be bad to your health. Half a bottle for a grown man with each meal is perfectly within reason.

Also, as compared to all other alcoholic beverages, wine is not as hard on the liver as destilates/spirits are. Its supposed to be easier to process. Furthermore, wine when paired with food, is absorbed into the body slowly which is better for the liver (think, the opposite of doing a tequila shot on an empty stomach), and this, Renaud says, makes wine much better for your health than other alcoholic beverages.

Any doctor will tell you that one ounce of any liquor a day will lower your chances of having a heart attack, its a proven fact. However, in the case of destilates/spirits, increasing it to two or three ounces, will begin to develop ill effects. With wine you can easily increase it, depending on your body weight, to 4-6 glasses a day with no immediate or long term ill effects. The study proves this (it also measured the complete health of the test subjects) and recommends that people drink wine with each meal, however, because alcoholism is the source of so many problems, and because people tend to be very foolish when taking doctors advice, doctors have limited themselves to recommending (in some cases prescribing) to their patients that they drink just 1-3 glasses.

Then that's 6-9 glasses a day, right? What? Not with breakfast? I guess that's where my problem is........


Seriously, other things that may or may not have been in the Baltimore/Bordeaux comparison- walking versus driving and the amount of crap food in the American diet would be huge factors.

Hroark, I don't disagree with you in general, but I am surprised to hear that one is to drink red wine at room temperature with a cheese fondue. Living at the heart of the cheese fondue country, nobody would ever serve red wine here, but only chilled dry white wine or hot tea. Given the problem in digesting the cheese, and having tried different drinks with the fondue, I for one find the hot tea (not sweetened please!) to be by far the best. It does crack me up though when I see American tourists have huge amounts of ice cold coke with their fondue (and since it makes you really thirsty they have even more than usual).

Indeed, I believe having some wine with your meal is a good thing, but again as I mentioned earlier I think the best is a glass (perhaps two) with dinner, accompanied by still water. The water will not do any harm to you, and will help in any thirst issue.

As for having wine for lunch, I would never do it as I do not like the effect the alcohol has on my mind. I can feel an effect of even just one glass, and later it makes me sleepy. Basically I will only drink water with lunch so as to avoid digestion problems and to stay sharp.

If you are having problems with digesting your food, feel bloated etc., after a meal, I would rather reconsider what I am eating rather than what I am drinking!

I used to share a botlle with Srrhgf over dinner, then one last glass watching TV...
Srrhgf got pregnant and the botlle still get emptied by the end of the evening....
I am now tryig to nit down on week days....
