Sailing Across the Atlantic Empty Sailing Across the Atlantic

Sailing across the Atlantic in less than 4 days!!!!

The record of sailing across the Atlantic has just been broken by a French boat Banque Populaire in 3 days, 15 hours and 25 minutes!! That is just totally insane. Their average speed was 32.94 knots (61 kmh) for a sailboat. They hit peak speeds of 45 knots (84 kmh)!!

I am really having trouble getting my head around that. We used to have a small catamaran, a Hobie Cat 16, that I loved sailing because it was so damn fast. We would get to speeds of over 20 knots with it, and that was just amazing. Also, we had a ski boat that would hit over 40 knots, and that was just plain scary to push it to the max on the open sea. But a sailboat going at speeds like that, and to maintain such a speed over such a period of time. Wow!

I should add that it was closely followed by another trimaran Groupama that completed the trans-Atlantic trip in 3 days, 18 hours and 12 minutes.

These guys are just plain crazy!

Wow, it's just beautiful, really. Good thing they made it in three days...doesn't look big enough to hold enough food to feed that crew for four days!!! ;-)

Seriosuly though, that is blazing fast and one gorgeous boat. Cool post, thanks!

Wow! It looks so fragile for an ocean crossing. I wonder how many crew to get across sailing 24 hours a day.

Just imagine the adrenaline off that run...

Notice the yacht has 3 different cockpits, 1 aft and one on either outrigger arm. I'm sure none of that would be possible to pilot without a sh*tload of microprocessors and sensors helping to trim nanosecond by nanosecond.

I don't speak French, so I don't know if anyone got hurt or not. Flipping at 50-60 knots in a sailboat could easily be deadly...
